Rodent Control 101 – How to Keep Mice and Rats Out for Good

Rodents are one of the most common pest problems in Massachusetts, and once they find their way inside, they can be surprisingly difficult to evict. They carry diseases, damage property, and reproduce quickly, making prevention your best defence.

How Rodents Get Inside Mice and rats can squeeze through tiny openings — mice can fit through gaps the size of a dime, and rats can fit through holes the size of a quarter. Common entry points include:

●       Gaps under doors and around windows

●       Holes in siding, roofing, or soffits

●       Openings around utility lines, plumbing, and vents

●       Cracks in foundations or basement walls

Signs You Might Have a Rodent Problem

●       Small, dark droppings in pantries, basements, or along baseboards

●       Gnaw marks on wood, plastic, or wires

●       Shredded paper, insulation, or fabric used for nesting

●       Scratching or squeaking sounds inside walls at night

Prevention Tips

●       Seal all cracks and holes with steel wool, metal flashing, or caulk

●       Keep food in airtight containers and clean up spills quickly

●       Store pet food securely and avoid leaving it out overnight

●       Keep garbage cans sealed and away from the house

●       Trim shrubs and trees away from the building to reduce cover

Rodent problems won’t fix themselves — the key is to block entry points and eliminate food sources before they multiply.
